Australia returns to its stricter diesel standard on 1 October 2026

Yahoo News Australia reported on 29 September 2026 that from 1 October Australia returns to a minimum diesel flash point of 61.5C, ending a temporary 60.5C threshold that had widened the pool of compliant fuel available for import and given local refineries more flexibility.

The Australian Logistics Council said diesel underpins the movement of essential goods and urged caution on timing while global markets remain volatile. A Monash University energy expert noted Australia is the world's largest consumer of internationally traded diesel in absolute terms and structurally dependent on imports. Diesel costs cascade through supply chains into food, medicine and construction prices.
